Labor and Greens call for royal commission
Calls for a royal commission into the disability sector have strengthened after a watchdog covering New South Wales and South Australia has revealed they received almost 200 reports of abuse or neglect against NDIS participants over three months in 2018, including 29 reports of sexual assault. The revelation follows a series of reports and inquiries into the sector that have demonstrated a prevalence of assault, neglect, and violence. Greens Senator and disability advocate Jordon Steele-John said the data was “awful and horrific”, however, “it is not surprising to anyone in this space”. The Greens are planning to put forward a motion calling for a royal commission when Parliament resumes in February, and Labor has said they will work with the Greens to reach a consensus.
