Coalition backs disability royal commission

The coalition government has backed a motion in the House of Representatives calling for the establishment of an inquiry into the abuse, neglect, and mistreatment of people with a disability. The vote came four days after the same motion passed the Senate without government support. Scott Morrison told parliament, “I take the issue of abuse and neglect of people with a disability very seriously and so does the government I lead.” Morrison stated he would seek advice from the states and territories before establishing the inquiry, however, advocates are concerned the lack of a definite announcement or firm timeline signals a lack of commitment.
